Senate Democrats are calling for a ban on powdered caffeine, which they say is much more powerful than the caffeine consumed in a cup of coffee. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which already warns consumers against using powdered caffeine, should completely prohibit the substance, according to Sens. Sherrod Brown
"According to the FDA, a single teaspoon of pure caffeine is roughly equivalent to the amount in [28] cups of coffee,” the senators wrote Monday. The Democrats will hold a press conference Tuesday to renew their calls for the FDA to ban the sales and marketing of powdered caffeine. The FDA says pure caffeine can cause vomiting, diarrhea, erratic heartbeat, seizures and death.“These symptoms are likely to be much more severe than those resulting from drinking too much coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages,” the FDA writes on its website.
