Canned domestic pork opens way for export to Singapore
- First shipment of 50,000 cans to be made on June 30, with export expected to reach 1 million cans a year -
□ The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (Minister Lee Eui-Kyung) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Kim Hyun-Soo) announced that Korea will ship the first batch of canned pork and retort foods to Singapore on June 30 as the government completed export consultation with the Singaporean government in May.
* Exporter: Lotte Food (based in Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do) // Export items: canned pork (Luncheon Meat)
○ Singapore imports more than 90% of its food consumption, and thus asks strict safety standards for imported food. The export is an achievement made by the cooperation between the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and exporters to earn the Singapore Food Administration (SFA)’s recognition of excellence of Korea's food safety management.
○ It is expected that the export of canned pork will contribute to the growth of domestic livestock farms and related industries since the product uses only domestic pork.
○ The export will start with 50,000 cans ($60,000) on June 30, and the annual export is expected to reach 1 million cans, which is expected to increase further with the registration of additional export work places.
□ In addition to canned foods and retort foods, the government is currently negotiating the export of all heat-processed pork products to Singapore.
○ The government plans to further expand support for the export of livestock products and diversification of export items to Indonesia and other countries targeted by the New Southern Policy.
