Purpose
This Market Access Advice provides information on the revision of Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) for organic livestock products to now include organic turkey.
Summary
Effective 25 July 2021, organic turkey exported to Japan will be required to be labelled with the JAS organic logo.
The requirement brings into force amendments to JAS for Organic Livestock. In essence, these amendments broaden the definition of poultry to include turkeys. From 25 July 2021, poultry is defined as chickens, quails, ostriches, turkeys, ducks, and wild ducks (including crossbreeds with ducks as wild duck).
Exporters are encouraged to make arrangements with JAS certified importers to ensure that the requirement for affixing the JAS logo by the importer is appropriately delegated.
Full details of the requirement can be found via the World Trade Organisation SPS notified document.
The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment encourages all exporters to work with their importer to ensure that the product meets current importing country requirements.
